This Thursday, July 21, 2022, Faustine Bollaert is at the helm of the France 2 program, “Un flirt & une danse”. Another love-themed show for the star public service presenter, who herself faced immense grief over the loss of the one she loved so much…among other things.

Faustine Bollaert has been shining on France Télévisions for several years now. Every day, at the controls of her show “It starts today”, the presenter makes us discover life stories like no other, with humor, kindness and sensitivity. On the private side, the mother of Abbie and Peter, the fruit of her love with the writer Maxime Chattam, has experienced personal dramas which have forged her laughing and optimistic temperament. But it is not easy to build oneself in the midst of consecutive bereavements…

Faustine Bollaert experienced tragedies at a very young age

If Faustine Bollaert has today found a beautiful sentimental balance on the arm of her husband, with whom she shares the passion for terrifying stories, she has, younger, experienced the worst: the loss of her first boyfriend. Usually rather discreet about her intimate sorrows, Faustine Bollaert indulged in a few confidences in 2019, on the set of Michel Cymes’ show “It won’t come out of here”. “I lost my boyfriend too from a motorcycle accident, when I had…” she began, suddenly overwhelmed with emotion. And to continue, more precisely: “This is the first time that I speak about it, I was not 18 years old. It was my first great love.

A painful period for the young Faustine Bollaert who, at that time, was already recovering with difficulty from two other losses. First that of her childhood best friend: “I was not 10 years old when I lost my best friend. I spent the morning waiting for her to come and sit next to me, class. She was there the day before… That day, she didn’t come. And all the days after, her place will remain empty.” Then, that of her maternal grandmother: “She died in my arms. It doesn’t matter, it happens to everyone in fact. But I had a summary of bereavements in adolescence, which made me had a very special relationship with death, it intrigued me, it fascinated me, it didn’t scare me, but it was a subject that came up a lot in my life.”

Behind this communicative smile that she strives to keep every week on public service, Faustine Bollaert hides pain. And then there are other dramas, which happened before he was born, but which never left his mind…

“Suddenly, no one, nothing”

In 2021, in the columns of the magazine Gala, the host returned to the disappearance of her paternal grandmother whom she, alas, never knew. “She is one of the great mysteries of my life,” she lamented. A grandmother who tragically died in 1974, along with Faustine Bollaert’s aunt and uncle, in a plane crash. If the host was born five years after the tragedy, the memory of the deceased punctuated her childhood. “I was always curious about her because my father always told me that I looked a lot like her. She was very funny, clowned around and loved others deeply”. Character traits that she seems to have inherited: “When I ask my parents about this grandmother, I have the impression that I inherited a lot from her. Not having met her is the one of the great regrets of my life.”

On the set of Michel Cymes, Faustine Bollaert had therefore returned to her young years enamelled by mourning and grief. Not easy to build after the loss of so many loved ones. “Suddenly, no one, nothing. I’m not complaining: everyone has to go through mourning. Simply, mine happened to me in adolescence, at a time when the personality is fundamentally forged.” From these dramas, Faustine Bollaert was able to draw lessons, painful of course, but which help her today to conceive of life in another way: “Disappearance, overnight, I know. I know that everything can stopping like that. It gives you the permanent fear of losing those you love… And an urgency to live (…) I would never have time to do everything, so I prefer to go to the essentials and the extraordinary. I need passion.”

The passion, the essential, the extraordinary, Faustine Bollaert continues to discover it every day through the stories of those who come to testify in “It starts today”. A nice way to cheat death.
