Revealed on Twitter, the supposed specifications of the future RTX 4070 paint the portrait of a badly equipped graphics card. It could as it stands in the same category as the current RTX 3090 Ti.
Nvidia obviously has some great things in store for us with the “plush” mid-range of its next line of graphics cards. By relying on the new Ada Lovelace GPU architecture and the latest 5 nm engraving refinements from TSMC, the RTX 4070 would be able to approach the performance of a current RTX 3090 Ti… while demonstrating a certain energy control with regard to the level of power supposedly developed.
On Twitter, the leaker Kopite7kimi revealed the main specifications of the chip. We thus learn that the RTX 4070 would operate a full AD104 GPU, sporting 7680 cores. The latter would be coupled with 12 GB of video memory in GDDR6X at 21 Gb / s, with a 192-bit bus and a bandwidth of up to 504 GB / s. Based on previous leaks, WCCFTech reminds that we should also find there 48 MB of L2 cache and up to 160 ROPs.
The RTX 3070 Ti eclipsed, the RTX 3090 Ti equaled?
Compared to the RTX 3070 Ti, which relies on an Ampere “GA104” chip engraved in 8 nm, these specifications leave you speechless: we would be on a 25% increase in the number of cores and on a 12x larger cache. In terms of frequencies, and if nothing is yet certain at this stage, the RTX 4070 should finally bet on a GPU clocked between 2.00 and 3.00 GHz. An increase in frequencies that we sense thanks to the change in the fineness of the engraving. As mentioned above, Nvidia would indeed move from Samsung’s 8 nm (which was actually similar to a refined and optimized 10 nm engraving) to TSMC’s 5 nm.

In terms of energy demand, things also look interesting. Because if the rumors indicated a TGP of 400 W for the RTX 4070 Ti, the “classic” RTX 4070 would be satisfied for its part with 300 W. For comparison, the current RTX 3070 is certainly limited to 220 W, but the RTX 3090 Ti peaks as a reminder at 450 W. In benchmark on 3D Mark Time Spy Extreme, the supposed RTX 4070 would however reach 11,000 points, almost as much as the reference RTX 3090 Ti on the same tool. An intriguing energy sobriety, but which should be put into perspective, because at equal range, Nvidia’s RTX 4000s already seem to display the most copious consumption.
On the price side, the RTX 4070 should anyway be positioned around 499 – 549 dollars. We would also find all the amenities expected on the Ada Lovelace lineage, such as 4th generation Tensor cores, 3rd generation RT cores, support for the latest APIs, or even support for NVENC encoding/decoding .
