As a sort of response to The Last of Us Part 1 leaks, PlayStation has just released a ten-minute video of the infamous remake, which is set to re-imagine Ellie and Joel’s original adventure. The opportunity to discover a lot of new images as well as new details, from the mouth of Naughty Dog. How much the graphics have been revised upwards, what about the gameplay? Here is our five-point summary with interview excerpts!

Since its announcement at last June’s Summer Game Fest, The Last of Us Part 1 has sparked as much excitement as misunderstanding. On the one hand, the first images show an unequivocal technical difference with particular attention to facial expressions and sets. On the other, many question the interest of such a project – the first The Last of Us is not even ten years old and has already had a remaster on PS4 – especially marketed at the high price of 80€, at the image of any other PS5 and Xbox Series generation blockbuster. To make matters worse, recent leaks have fueled fears over gameplay, billed as “rebuiltby Naughty Dog on Twitter, logically following the same philosophy as the overall remake. For the studio and PlayStation, it was now or never to speak up and give more info on The Last of Us Part 1. And that’s exactly what happened on the night of the 21st. to July 22, 2022.

Like The Last of Us Part 2?

As this is the point that questions the most at the moment, we will start with this one: the gameplay. First of all, during the ten minute presentation of The Last of Us Part 1, it was only made no mention of dodging or being able to go pronetwo things introduced by The Last of Us Part 2. Obviously: so players won’t be able to hide under cars either, again like in the second installment. Similarly, there is no information to report on a possible overhaul of the level design and exploration for the adventure zones, which are more open in the 2020 section. We can however note the arrival of workbenches in The Last of Us Part 1, useful for upgrading weapons and changing their appearance. Above all, Naughty Dog has highlighted details that will reinforce the immersion and credibility of the fights in this remake.

Significant progress

The most important point is the artificial intelligence of the adversaries taken from The Last of Us Part 2. “Our AI technology has advanced incredibly (compared to the first part” affirms here Mathew Gallant, director of the project. So that Neil Druckmann, co-president of Naughty Dog, clarifies that the way “enemies communicate with each other, chase you, and bypass you” makes clashes and moments when the player takes backhand opponents “much more rewarding”. The team generally speaks of a “more sophisticated” artificial intelligence engine. As a reminder, The Last of Us Part 2 was already very good in this area.

In addition, note that this better understanding and approach to the environment by NPCs (non-player characters) also applies to your allies. For example, Ellie, when playing Joel, or the protagonists Sam and Henry now benefit from more believable moves when they are about to be spotted by bad guys. They are even able to anticipate danger in order to position themselves accordingly. Good news to avoid those strange moments, when a friend passes under the beard and the nose of a guard without being seen. On the whole, the animation of the movements was the subject of more thorough care, with the “motion matching”. Basically, the engine chooses the most realistic gestures for your avatar based on the trajectories entered by the controller.

Photo mode, permadeath, outfits to unlock:

The icing on the cake, The Last of Us Part 1 will welcome new features requested by fans, such as a permadeath mode (permanent death of your character) a speedrun mode as well as a lot of new outfits to unlock. We also note the arrival of a photo mode, at first glance similar to that of The Last of Us Part 2, and what to display original filters on the screen.


Improvements thanks to the PS5

A point on the technical part

We continue with the improvements obtained thanks to the PlayStation 5 and therefore – first of all – the graphics. Since the first trailer and more particularly a comparative striking for the character of Tess, one thing is certain: the expressions and animations of The Last of Us Part 1 will be at least as convincing as those of The Last of Us Part 2, if not more. During the ten-minute presentation, Neil Druckmann recalled his desire to closer to the “original vision” of the project and to break free from the technological constraints imposed by the PS3 at the time. On this point, the video reveals another comparison, where the original performance of Sam and Henry and the PS5 remake rub shoulders. The result is without appeal: it is screamingly realistic.

Another advantage with this gain in power, Naughty Dog can keep the same 3D models regardless of the scene, making it possible to introduce “seamless” transitions between gameplay phases and cutscenes. An important detail for Shaun Escayg, creative director on The Last of Us Part 1, to keep the player “constantly in the world” of the license. A world which, according to Neil Druckmann, represents “a huge part” of the identity of the whole. In this regard, Shaun Escayg speaks of a completely overhauled art direction with a rendering as well as a level of detail significantly revised upwards. Note the arrival of partially destructible sets, with bullets that can tear the concrete, objects placed on the right and left.

4K / 60 fps and PS5, what about graphics modes?

On the PlayStation Blog, we can learn that the remake of The Last of Us will be entitled to two graphics modes: native 4K / 30 frames per second, the other in dynamic 4K and 60 fps.

The advantages of the DualSense

Inevitably, like every PlayStation game, The Last of Us Part 1 had the right to its insert on the DualSense, the famous PS5 controller. “All weapons in the remake have different resistance when firing with adaptive triggers” says Matthew Gallant. The director of course mentioned the bow, a great specialty of the Sony controller, but also expanded on the shotgun: “When you shoot it, you will have a haptic vibration during the shot but also on the pump”. In addition to clashes, haptic feedback – vibrations on the surface of the controller – will occur at more subtle moments, when a hero touches something. Finally, we can note the use of 3D Audio, to locate an enemy with sound alone.


A lot of work on accessibility

We finally end with an addition that does not concern everyone but which is very important: that of accessibility. The Last of Us Part 2 had already done wonders in this area, allowing for example to customize the buttons of the controller at will or to distinguish, using color filters, very clearly the character of the enemies. A work that continues on its way on The Last of Us Part 1. On the PlayStation Blog, we can read that the remake will mark more than sixty accessibility options including one to our knowledge unpublished: full audio description support. “Each option (of this kind, editor’s note) that we add is a barrier that is removed for someone” sums up Matthew Gallant.
