Even in summer, the routine continues: at Frandroidagain and again we test the phones that come out with always the objective of determining which are the best smartphones of the year. In this noble quest, we allow ourselves a few monthly points to take a step back, look in the rear view mirror, and determine the cream of the crop among the devices freshly passed through our hands. And we generally like the Top 3 at Frandroid.

Thus, over the past month of July, we again crossed paths with several smart cell phones that are worth highlighting. This allows us to list the three best recent smartphones on Frandroid at the beginning of August 2022.

Phone with nothing (1)

  • An extraordinary design
  • Good in-game power
  • Full phone

Available at €469 on Amazon

The Nothing phone (1) is the first smartphone from the brand founded by Carl Pei – ex-boss of OnePlus – and in order not to miss its first steps in this difficult market, the company wanted to go all out on an iconic design. In addition to the flat edges that are reminiscent of the iPhone, it also and above all has a relatively transparent back and partly covered with LED strips that illuminate it with each notification that you can obviously customize at will. On the aesthetic level, it is clearly apart and this originality can obviously please some users.

In addition to that, the Nothing phone (1) is rather pleasant in hand, benefits from a 120 Hz Oled screen, good performance in game and a good main camera. Everything is wrapped in a Nothing OS interface that is simple to learn, refined, but not devoid of good ideas. However, there are still a few bugs here and there that may occur, but hopefully this will be fixed soon. Especially since the updates seem to be in the spotlight: the brand promises three deployments of new versions of Android and four years of security patches. Do not hesitate to explore the best tricks of the Nothing phone (1) to fully exploit it.

Google Pixel 6a

  • Excellent in photography for this price
  • Small format pleasant in hand
  • The Pixel software experience

Available at €459 on Amazon

The Google Pixel 6a does not make the same strategic choices at all as the competitor mentioned just before. Its very sober design does not reinvent anything and is above all content to be in line with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. But it is nevertheless a strong point since the content format is very pleasant in hand. Note also the pleasant interface of Pixels and its simplicity. It’s also swarming with clever little features here and there, often based on the intelligence of Google Assistant. However, the huge strength of the smartphone lies in the photo part, the quality of which was also praised by DxOMark. We particularly recommend the portrait mode and the night mode which clearly have an inimitable and highly appreciable Google touch.

The photo is therefore the flagship asset of the smartphone at less than 500 euros. On the other hand, to take advantage of it you have to make sizeable compromises and we think in particular of the screen limited to 60 Hz or of the charging capped at 18 W and therefore very slow. In short, there is clearly a Google Pixel 6a vs Nothing phone (1) match, a photo champion against a well-balanced phone. What are you going to choose?

Asus Zenfone 9

  • Compact smartphone
  • Ultra autonomous
  • Very powerful

Available at €799 on Fnac

The Asus Zenfone 9 is the top-of-the-range smartphone in this Top 3. And unlike most phones of its caliber, it has a very small format with a screen below the 6-inch mark (5.9 inches). This is a very rare thing in 2022. Even rarer, despite its compact format, it is excellent in autonomy. He’s a marathon runner for such a small size. Another important quality: its performance is ultra good and makes it possible to run demanding games extremely fluidly (at the cost of a slight heating which is not prohibitive at all). Asus is therefore faithful to its history and thus swims against the tide. But maybe that’s just how his phone can shine.

The quality of the screen is also excellent and if you want to fully immerse yourself in the content you are consuming, you can plug in a wired headset. Yes, there is a 3.5 mm jack on the Asus Zenfone 9! Again, this is a very rare thing in 2022 on the high end.
