On the occasion of the release of “Prey” on Disney +, back on all the looks of the Predator in the various films of the franchise.
Since 1987, when John McTiernan’s film was released in cinemas, the Predator has appeared no less than six other times on the screens. In Prey by Dan Trachtenberg, available on Disney+, the warrior is back, more dangerous than ever and with an all-new design. The release of this latest installment is an opportunity to dive back into the history of the space monster with its many other looks over the years.
Behind the creation of the Predator, we find the emblematic artist Stan Winston. He is one of Hollywood’s greatest makeup artists along with Rick Baker. But before this iconic look, the monster looked like something else entirely. It was Jean-Claude Van Damme who was initially to play him. On the board, the appearance of the creature created by Boss Movie Studios is disputed. The Belgian actor is fired from the production. He is replaced by Kevin Peter Hall in a brand new costume created by Stan Winston.
Predator 2 (1990)
In the following, forget the jungle of Guatemala. Direction Los Angeles. Released in 1990, the film Predator 2 takes up the design of the first opus. Artist Stan Winston is once again leading the make-up and actor Kevin Peter Hall is donning the costume for the second time. He died a year later, in 1991. Predator 2 was one of his last roles.
Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)
Before reuniting with the Warrior in his own franchise, the Creature encountered the Alien in two Alien vs. Predator in 2004 and 2007. In the second film, a hybrid version of the two monsters appears. We find the skull of the Alien and the famous jaws of the Predator as well as his dreadlocks. The two artists Alec Gillis & Tom Woodruff, Jr. signed the design of this unique creature.
In the third film of the franchise, titled Predators and produced by Robert Rodriguez, viewers discover a new design, that of the Super Predator. Bigger and more impressive with red skin. The film also features the River Ghosts, an alien species whose look closely resembles the one that was dropped for the first installment.
The Predator (2018)
The film The Predator by Shane Black in turn presents a new version of the monster: the Ultimate Predator. Genetically modified, the super warrior, of an impressive size, is certainly the most powerful of all. In the feature film, he is embodied in motion capture – a technique for capturing the movements of real actors to transcribe them by computer – by Brian A. Prince and Kyle Strauts.
In Preythe very last installment directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the Predator is very different from the other versions. He appears taller and thinner, with a much larger jawline. His helmet is made from a piece of skeleton. It is quite possible to deduce that the technology of warriors was not so developed at that time. Dane DiLiegro, a former professional basketball player, plays the monster.
