CINEMA – After secondary roles in X-Men and Jurassic World, Omar Sy continues his appearances in Hollywood. The actor won this time a main role: the Chinese director John Woo has indeed chosen to be at the head of his next film.

This feature film is nothing but a remake of The killerthat the same filmmaker had released in 1989. On the other hand, its distribution is not planned for dark rooms, but for the Peacock streaming platform, launched by the Universal studio in 2020. It is therefore difficult to access it, the platform being currently unavailable in France.

The information, first revealed by the American media Deadline this Thursday, August 4, was confirmed in stride by the actor himself on his Instagram account. ” What a challenge, but so grateful to have this opportunity ! “Writes Omar Sy after relaying the Deadline article.

A cult film that inspired Quentin Tarantino and Bradon Lee

The killercult for its action scenes, tells the story of Ah Jong, a hitman who, during his last mission, accidentally blinds a young singer. He will therefore accept a last blow to finance the operation of the latter.

If its success was rather moderate in Hong Kong, in the West its spectacular character has been widely praised by critics. Later, John Woo would direct Front/Off with Nicolas Cage and John Travolta (1997), or even mission impossible 2 with Tom Cruise (2000).

The killer also served as a reference for many directors, such as Bradon Lee and Quentin Tarantino. The latter even made little nods to the film in the dialogues of Jackie Brownreleased in 1997.

For the moment, no release date has been revealed for the remake, but Universal is aiming for a release sometime in 2023.

Omar Sy is also expected in part 3 of Lupinefirst French series to rank at the top of Netflix’s views in the United States. He will also be featured in Skirmishers in January 2023, film by Mathieu Vadepied presented at the Cannes Film Festival last May.
