The defensive midfielder was long tracked by the club by Monaco to replace Tchouaméni who was about to leave for Real Madrid. OM saw Lepenant as the perfect replacement for Boubacar Kamara. Playing as a defensive midfielder, but still able to move a notch higher in the field, Johann Lepenant had only one year left on his contract and would have been recruited at a lower cost, which would have been perfect for the finances for the club.
