What a complicated recovery for the Stéphanois. If they thought that the level in Ligue 2 would be lower than in Ligue 1, the Dijonese quickly put their heads back on their shoulders. The Greens were beaten two goals to one by the Dijonese who proved to be superior in all areas of the game. It is a small miracle that ASSE, after an indigestible first half, did not concede more than two goals (Le Bihan, 29th, Soumaré, 41st). Green side, the little light came from Aiki, author of a superb goal (69th). Denis Bouanga was expelled at the very end of the game.

Mickäel Le Bihan opened the scoring in the 29th minute by taking a pass from Bryan Soumaré after an action on the left wing from Christopher Rocchia. Soumaré made it 2-0 after a first shot from Idrissa Camara saved by goalkeeper Etienne Green and good work from Le Bihan after a throw-in (40′). Dijon could even have led 3-0 if Wali Nassi then Le Bihan had not missed the target in an incredible way (49, 50). The Greens were able to hope to come back with a goal from Ayman Aiki scored with a volley after receiving a cross from Denis Bouanga (68).

Furlan, the rise and the fear: “After the match, I freaked out”

With three penalty points inflicted after the incidents at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium at the end of the return barrage against Auxerre, on May 29, the Greens find themselves in last place with -3 pts, six lengths from a potential candidate for the climb and others who could win Saturday night or Monday. The Stéphanois therefore still have a headache after a nightmarish 2021-2022 season. They have not won in the league since April 16 and their victory over Brest at home (2-1), six Ligue 1 matches to which must be added the two play-off matches against AJA.

Workforce still under construction

The workforce, relieved of fifteen players, including fourteen at the end of the contract, remains under construction under the direction of the new coach, Laurent Battles. Departures are still expected such as that of Bouanga, excluded in the 90th minute, Harold Moukoudi, Yvan Neyou, not retained, or Adil Aouchiche, on the bench.

Even if ASSE has recruited players experienced in Ligue 2 like Jimmy Giraudon, Victor Lobry or Anthony Briançon, the Stéphanois suffered against the Dijonnais for an hour despite the support, without incident, of 450 ultra supporters confined to their parking lot. Several hundred fans also came for free access.

A paradox because Saint-Etienne must now serve four firm matches behind closed doors at home, again for the incidents against Auxerre… Offensively, the Greens were too timid but they could have equalized at 1-1 through Zaydou Youssouf (34 ) or by Zargo Touré who failed to score against his side (40). Baptiste Reynet also diverted a shot from Bouanga (63). Very little for a candidate for the L1.
