In Luxembourg : They gave their car an extra “touch”
LUXEMBOURG – Motorists drive with a personalized registration number. They explain why they made this choice.

Alexandre kept his late father’s car, the plate of which bears his initials.

“The letters on the plate refer to my first and last name and the numbers refer to the price of the car,” explains Sylvia.

“We had decided to do it so as never to forget how much we had to pay every month”. Sylvia, who is not devoid of humor, is one of the motorists in Luxembourg who have a personalized license plate. “My plaque is personalized with 2 letters and 4 numbers,” she continues. The letters refer to my surname and first name and the numbers, the price of the car”.
Alexandre, for his part, kept his late father’s car, whose plate number bears his initials. “Cars were our common passion,” he says with emotion. We could talk about it for hours. We got together sometimes to go do a few milestones together, in our respective cars. When he left us in 2017, I inherited his car, which he always took care to keep in exceptional condition. For his part, Thierry, owner of several vehicles, is a true purist. All its plates thus refer to the model and/or the power of the engine.
Affordable approach
Personalizing your car plate in Luxembourg is an affordable process. It is thus necessary to pay “only” 50 euros in the event of first use of the number (as for current serial numbers) and 24 euros in the event of reuse of a number by the same holder. In Belgium, you have to pay 1,000 euros (!).
Several possible combinations
The Ministry of Mobility recently provided some statistics concerning license plates in Luxembourg. He specifies that there are still 18,232 license plates in circulation, the number of which is made up of two letters and three digits. Those comprising a letter and four numbers are 14,533. There are 583 plates comprising a two-digit number and two letters. Finally, only 55 cars display a plate with only three digits.
There are three different series: 5-digit number, 2-letter and 4-digit and 4-digit (as there are no more 4-digit numbers available, assigning such a number can take several years). Asked about the number of cars in the Grand Duchy that circulate with a personalized license plate, the SNCA indicates that it does not have statistics on this subject.
Special series for the Diplomatic Corps
Special series of numbers are reserved for the registration of certain categories of vehicles. The vehicles of the Grand-Ducal Court are thus registered under the numbers between 1 and 19, as well as under the numbers between 1 and 19 preceded by the letters CD (Diplomatic Corps). Vehicles in the government garage are registered under numbers between 20 and 50, as well as under numbers between 20 and 50 preceded by the letters CD.
