Game News Hogwarts Legacy, Dead Island 2… What should we remember from the Opening Night Live of gamescom 2022?
After the Summer Game Fest, last night it was gamescom’s turn to offer a launch party full of announcements (about thirty in total). So what is he holding back this time around? We take stock.
Hogwarts Legacy, Sonic Frontiers… The stars of the evening
Hogwarts Legacy: Hogwarts Legacy went rather winning to win the title of big star of the evening. The game in the Harry Potter universe was expected at the turn during this launch party. We knew he was there and we hoped to see him reassure the players after the announcement of his postponement. Unfortunately, no detailed presentation for the game of Avalanche and Warner but a new trailer focusing on black magic and the dark side of the school of sorcery, from the Forbidden Forest to the Chamber of Secrets. On the trail of the mysteries linked to the founders of Hogwarts, the danger is omnipresent and can take many forms. To deal with Inferi and other terrifying creatures, you sometimes need make decisive magical choices. But beware, Unforgivable Curses are unforgivable for a reason and using them will have serious consequences.
As for the game itself, the gameplay and its mechanics, we will not know more for the moment. On the other hand, this trailer made it possible to present the Digital Deluxe Edition. Not only will the latter allow you to have access to new cosmetics, but also to the game in advance with early access 72 hours before the game’s release. Also note that pre-orders for Hogwarts Legacy will be open from August 25.
But a small trailer is not enough to draw all the light on itself. During these almost two hours of conference, Hogwarts Legacy had to share the spotlight, especially with Sonic Frontiers. The open world game of the little blue hedgehog was particularly highlighted. Unveiling familiar levels and more dynamic gameplay than before, Sonic Frontiers has shown itself in a better light, to our delight. This nice presentation ended with the confirmation of the release date which had leaked shortly before the event: November 8, 2022.
Hoyoverse again had a whole segment and it started with its flagship game: Genshin Impact. The one we compared to his debut at Breath of the Wild revealed to us in version 3.0. On the program: a new region (Sumeru), a new element (the Dendro) and new characters (Collei and Tighnari) in particular. And then it was the turn of Honkai: Star Rail to show itself in a new light. With its new trailer, this RPG reveals a much darker side than usual. No new information in sight but enough to intrigue curious players a little more.
For the rest, there was something for everyone. Some were ecstatic to see a little more of Return to Monkey Island (+ release date) or Gotham Knights (which saw its release date advanced by four days), while others were jubilant over the gameplay Ever Bloodier from The Callisto Protocol. As expected, the DLC for Dying Light 2: Stay Human also showed up. It is called Bloody Ties and will allow you to discover a new scripted adventure leading you in the footsteps of the vile Skullface. See you on October 13 to find out. This month, the 28th to be precise, will also begin The Outlast Trials beta which, as expected, revealed itself a little more last night. We had the right to more details with in particular gameplay and indications on the story.
Dead Island 2, Lies of P… The rumors were true
Yesterday, we shared with you a good part of the rumors about this launch party. As for Hideo Kojima, he did make an appearance… but only to tell us about his podcast (Structure of the brain). For the rest, the leaks turned out to be true. Against all odds Dead Island 2 has indeed signed its big comeback with a short trailer and a gameplay session which is reassuring for the fans. It must be said that after its announcement in 2014, the game had the right to chaotic years of development. He is also at his third studio, Dambuster Studios. The latter is obviously the right one because Dead Island 2, a great Arlesian in the video game world, has even found a release date: February 3, 2023 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series, PS4 and Xbox One.
Another confirmed leak: New Tales from the Borderlands, the sequel to the narrative game Tales from the Borderlands. Confirmed earlier in the year, the title had dropped a possible release date, synopsis and visuals. If we knew that he would point the tip of his nose last night, nothing was sure about this information. But they have been validated: the adventures of Aru, Octavio and Fran will begin on October 21 on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch and PC. Pre-orders are already launched. Note that if Gearbox and not Telltale is in charge of the project, the narrative game studio was not left out last night. He gave us a preview of The Expanse: A Telltale Series.
Going back to the rumours, we can also mention Lies of P, the Souls-Like in the Pinocchio universe. Announced in May 2021, this strange game had intrigued many people before being relatively silent…until recently. It was indeed at the heart of rumors giving it available Day One in the Xbox Game Pass. The information had been more or less confirmed by a visual of the Xbox stand at gamescom, but it’s now official! We were also able to see a little more gameplay, which is not surprising since a demo of the game is playable on the living room on the Xbox side. For the others, it will be necessary to wait until 2023 to get their hands on the title.
Awakening of the dunes, Under the waves… The little surprises
There were still a few surprises that we had not seen coming during this evening. She actually started with one of them. Former Grand Theft Auto producer Leslie Benzies and his team came to show us the first images of Everywhere, “an open-world AAA game with a multiplayer experience featuring an epic narrative”. Unveiled earlier in the year, the survival MMO in the Dune universe then showed itself a little more, including finding an official name. Funcom’s game will be called Dune Awakening. We will have to be satisfied with this simple information because no release date has been revealed.
The new game from the creators of Subnautica has unveiled as expected. Responding to the name of Moonbreaker, it is a real strategic board game in a video game version, all in a science fiction universe. Early access will begin on September 29 if you are curious. More surprising was the announcement of a game published by Quantic Dream. Signed Parallel Studio, Under The Waves also has the air of Subnautica, even if it will be more focused on narration. It will land in 2023 on PS5, Xbox Series, PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
Alumni from Bethesda and Obsidian also took advantage of the event to teaser a game under development. Wyrdsong remains quite enigmatic but we know that it will be an open-world RPG set in an alternative Middle Ages. Lords of the Fallen 2 has come back from the dead as The Lords of the Fallen, a “spiritual heir” Souls-Like from Deck13. The developers of The Surge have also revealed their next title, scheduled for 2023: the action-RPG Fallen Atlas.
Nice little surprises have also appeared, such as Moving Out 2, Friends vs Friends, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Blacktail or Where Winds Meet. On the hardware side, in addition to the wacky Pokémon car, we especially had the right to the announcement of the DualSense Edge, the Elite Series from PlayStation. On the program: adjustable controls, interchangeable player profiles… all for an optimal experience for players, we are promised. As you will have understood, this Opening Night Live was quite dense, but here are the main announcements that should be remembered. If you feel like it, you can find all the announcements in order on our Live Feed from yesterday.
The launch party is over, but not gamescom. The German fair starts today and will last until Sunday 28 August. And who says show says full of information and news, so don’t hesitate to follow JV to know everything about gamescom games.
