Guide: What are the best ultra-portable waterproof speakers? July 2022

Advertisements

Whether green, yellow, red or blue, the ultra-portable speaker has become an essential ally in many cases. However, some of the situations may turn out to be harsher than others, in particular because of the presence of dust, sand or proximity to a water point. On a construction site, in a bathroom, a kitchen, a garden, at the beach or near a swimming pool, these are all examples that hardly lend themselves to all the portable speakers on the market. That’s why we offer you this buying guide to find what you’re looking for among the best ultra-portable waterproof Bluetooth speakers.

Water and dust resistance are measured by the protection index (also called IP). This index consists of two numbers: the first indicates the level of resistance to dust (ranging from X to 6) and the second reveals the level of protection against water intrusion (ranging from X to 9). Thus, an IPX4 index indicates an absence of protection against dust and resistance against splashing water. An IP67 index demonstrates total protection against dust and resistance against the effects of temporary immersion up to 1 m deep for 30 min. The speakers in this buying guide meet the watertightness criterion, with at least IPX7 certification.

Strong points

  • Extremely balanced sound performance.
  • Impressive bass reproduction.
  • Powerful, its own.
  • Complete orders.
  • Resistant.

Weak points

  • Pronounced directivity, speaker without stand.
  • No mini jack.
  • Average autonomy.

With the Soundlink Micro, Bose once again demonstrates all its know-how in terms of bass and power in a very contained volume. The ergonomics do not lag behind, offering very complete controls and excellent resistance. Be careful though: the absence of a jack could cool more than one!

How the pricing table works

Strong points

  • Rich and pleasant sound signature at moderate volume.
  • Elegant and robust design (IP67 certified).
  • Generous autonomy.
  • Very easy to handle, complete controls, multipoint Bluetooth.

Weak points

  • Sharp and lively appearance exacerbated by the highlighting of high mids and highs.
  • Generous reserve of power, but unusable.
  • No mini-jack input.
  • Not very useful Marshall Bluetooth smartphone app.

For a first draft on the market of ultra-portable speakers, the Willen surprises with the elegance of its design, its generous autonomy, but also the overflowing energy it contains. However, we regret that this great power cannot be exploited, otherwise the listening experience will be degraded quite significantly.

Strong points

  • Surprisingly rich and balanced sound reproduction considering its size.
  • Outstanding build quality and finish.
  • Robust design, waterproof (IP67).
  • The carabiner, still just as practical.
  • Quick and easy handling.

Weak points

  • Traces of sibilance more or less marked depending on the listening conditions.
  • Significant power reserve, strongly limited by distortion and pumping effects.
  • No mini-jack input, no multipoint Bluetooth connection.
  • Still no additional functionality.

Still just as practical, robust, durable and easy to use, the fourth version of the Clip surprises with its progress in terms of sound reproduction. If a few rare references are ahead of it, the gap it widens on this last point with the majority of speakers of its size remains notable. If you have no problem with the absence of a mini-jack input, the JBL Clip 4 is positioned as an ultraportable speaker of choice.

How the pricing table works

Strong points

  • Deep bass and well transcribed.
  • Omnidirectional sound distribution.
  • Long battery life (16 hours at moderate volume).
  • Good build quality and sturdiness.
  • Stereo pairing possible with two SRS-XB13.

Weak points

  • Blatant lack of precision in the high-mids/treble.
  • No mini-jack input, no multipoint functionality.

The SRS-XB13 is a good extra speaker that will delight the most adventurous and the less fortunate to add sound to a small room such as a bedroom, a bathroom, or even an outdoor area near a swimming pool. In terms of sound performance, it is difficult for us to recommend it against a Go 3 or a JBL Clip 4, which are much more convincing. The XB13 does, however, have small practical arguments that are not negligible to put forward: greater autonomy, slightly more complete controls and the possibility of connecting two similar speakers in stereo.

The third version of the JBL Go marks a real evolution compared to the previous model. The Go 3 is full of surprises both in terms of its robustness and its sound performance, more than honorable for an ultraportable speaker. If it does not compare perfectly with our absolute reference, the Bose Soundlink Micro, it is undoubtedly positioned as excellent value for money.

Thanks to its extremely compact dimensions, its good size/power ratio and its modest price, the Go was a dazzling success in 2016. The Go 2, now waterproof, more resistant and aesthetic, offering a better controlled and more powerful sound performance, therefore has all the assets to, in turn, appeal to fans of nomadic listening.
