Game News God of War: The Actor Behind Kratos Reveals His Amazing Technique For Landing The Role!
If Kratos’ fury is so palpable in the latest God of War, it’s because the stuntman who played him during the motion capture process was fully invested in his character even before landing the role. Eric Jacobus delivers an amazing video!
Get the role of Kratos at all costs
If dubbing actors are regularly highlighted when we talk about the great star figures of video games (in this case Christopher Judge in the case of Kratos from God of War), this is almost never the case for actors in charge of of the motion capture process. Without them, however, the crucial step of animating the protagonists of an action game in a lifelike way could entirely discredit the role. to the point of completely breaking the immersion.
Eric Jacobus is certainly not the only one to have been selected to give life to Kratos in the last installment of the saga God of War, but the motivation of the stuntman was undoubtedly at the height of the fury that characterizes the character. After rising to prominence in 2016 through the IRL series based on the fighting game saga Tekken, Eric Jacobus managed to catch the attention of the team behind the game God of War (2018) to the point of landing an audition for motion capture. But he had prepared everything beforehand…
Chop it up!
It must be said that the stuntman did not do things halfway to stand out, going so far as to make a long video upstream in which he performs a monstrous range of combat techniques characterizing the hero of God of War. Completely invested in his character, Eric Jacobus did not hesitate to use symbolic accessories to show his mastery of the ax by dismembering the poor model instructed to serve as his guinea pig!
In 2016, the Santa Monica studio asked me to audition for Kratos in God of War (2018). Before arriving, I sent this video (I added sound effects for this version, they weren’t in the original). The audition that followed lasted 8 hours and I got the part. – Eric Jacobus
An 8-hour audition followed, after which Eric Jacobus finally landed the role to bring the character of Kratos to life in God of War (2018). His performance even allowed him to perform motion capture sessions for other protagonists in the game, such as Balder, Magni and Modi.. In his video, Eric Jacobus made a point of specifying that he was not the only stuntman in charge of the movements of Kratos but it must be recognized that he embodies in a striking way one of the greatest figures of video games!
I wasn’t the only stuntman for Kratos. Many other artists have lent their stunt skills to this character, including Chris J. and the late Shad Gaspard. – Eric Jacobus
Eric Jacobus will be back in God of War: Ragnarok due November 9 on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
